He gazed out at the landscape spreading beyond Cooper’s Rest, the mountains rising to the west, the potential and possibilities that lay out there for him somewhere. Maybe, someday, he could afford to settle down and think about a wife and family but now wasn’t that time.

He glanced at the side of the house toward the doctor’s office. He knew that Marcia was there with her father, tending to the last of the miners who had been badly injured in the mine collapse. Another one had died a few days ago. Two had been well enough to leave. Dale had no idea whether they had stayed in town or left Cooper’s Rest to find work elsewhere. He didn’t blame any of those miners who had been rescued from the collapse for not going back. They were a hard, brave lot.
